The Unanswered Riddle

The retirement community called it 'the courtyard,' but Elena knew better. It was a waiting room for the final act. She sat on her favorite bench, an orange in one hand, watching the other residents shuffle past like ghosts of their former selves.

Then came the dog—a golden retriever with mismatched eyes and a gray muzzle, stopping at her feet as if summoned. His name tag read 'Sphinx.'

'Sphinx?' she asked the owner, a woman half her age with tired eyes.

'My husband was obsessed with mythology,' the woman said, sitting beside Elena. 'He said dogs are the true riddle keepers. Love you without words, leave you without warning.' She peeled her own orange, the scent cutting through the sterile air. 'He died two years ago today.'

Elena's throat tightened. She hadn't spoken about David in decades—the college boyfriend who asked her to choose between her career and their future, who told her she'd regret choosing ambition over love. She'd chosen law firm over wedding dress, partnership over pregnancy. And now, sitting in this courtyard at sixty-seven, she couldn't say she regretted it exactly. But the what-ifs had a way of resurfacing in quiet moments.

'Did you?' Elena asked. 'Regret it?'

The woman smiled, bitter and sweet. 'Every single day. And I'd do it again.' She fed a piece of orange to Sphinx. 'Some choices aren't about regret. They're about which version of yourself you're willing to become.'

Sphinx pressed his wet nose against Elena's hand, and for the first time in years, she let herself cry—not for what she'd lost, but for what she'd chosen. The riddle wasn't about having it all. It was about accepting that every answer meant losing something else.
