The Truth in the Water
Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, clutching his iPhone like it was the only thing keeping him tethered to reality. Inside the device lived his carefully curated Instagram aesthetic—the Marcus who had perfect hair, the Marcus who wasn't terrified of water, the Marcus who actually knew how to swim.
"You coming in or what?" called Tyler, effortlessly backstropping through the chlorine-blue water. Tyler, whose hair always looked perfect wet or dry. Tyler, who probably fell out of the womb swimming laps around everyone else.
"Yeah, just," Marcus lied, finger already tapping his screen to check nonexistent notifications. His hair was straightened within an inch of its life, a three-hour operation that transformed his curls into something that said I belong here. But swimming? Swimming said goodbye to all that. Swimming said hello to frizz, to shrinkage, to the questions he didn't want to answer about why he never went swimming.
His phone buzzed—actually buzzed this time. A DM from Jordan, the girl he'd been talking to for three weeks. The Jordan who knew him from his posts, not from real life. The Jordan who thought his hair naturally fell like that.
"Pool party at Tyler's 🔥 You should come!"
Marcus stared at the message. He could claim he was busy. He could say his mom needed him. He could stay on the sidelines, phone in hand, living in the digital space where his hair was perfect and he was never vulnerable.
But something about Jordan's emoji, the way she'd been asking him to hang out for weeks—it made him want to be real. To be seen.
His thumbs hovered over the keyboard. Heart pounding like he was about to jump off a cliff instead of typing words.
"I'm here. But I don't really swim much. My hair gets kind of... wild."
Send.
Three dots appeared immediately. Marcus held his breath, watching them bounce. Was it too honest? Too weird? Would Jordan think he was being dramatic?
"Lol that's literally me with my natural curls 😂 Come in anyway! Who cares!"
Marcus looked up from his phone. Tyler was waving him over, grinning like he'd known this moment was coming all along. Like he understood what it meant to stand at the edge of something scary and choose to dive in anyway.
Marcus set his iPhone on a dry towel. He could feel everyone watching, could feel the weight of three years of hiding, of carefully avoiding pool parties and beach days and anything that might expose him.
He jumped.
The shock of cold water swallowed him whole. When he broke the surface, sputting and gasping, his hair was already starting to curl back to its natural state, shrinking up toward his scalp. No more perfect aesthetic. No more carefully curated version of himself.
Just Marcus, frizzy hair and all, splashing Tyler in the face.
"Finally!" Tyler laughed, dunking him back under.
Later, sitting poolside with Jordan (who was actually even better in person than she was over DM), his hair dried into a magnificent halo of curls that nothing could have predicted from his straightened photos. His iPhone sat ignored on his towel as they talked about everything and nothing, real conversations replacing carefully crafted captions.
He hadn't just learned to swim today. He'd learned to surface.
