The Truth Beneath the Hat

spyhatcablepadel

Elena adjusted the brim of her husband's fedora — the charcoal one he'd worn to every charity gala, every corporate merger celebration, every lie. The *hat* smelled of him: sandalwood and the metallic tang of secrets.

She'd found the *cable* taped to the underside of his desk drawer at 3 AM, a thin black wire snaking toward a hidden compartment. When she'd traced it to its source, she'd found enough evidence to dismantle his company's entire acquisition division. Her husband wasn't just an executive; he was a corporate *spy* selling their joint life's work to their bitterest rival.

Now, waiting at the *padel* club where they'd first met — he, sweating through his shirt after a brutal match; she, pretending to understand the rules — Elena watched him approach across the clay court. His smile was the same one that had convinced her to invest her inheritance in his startup ten years ago.

"You're wearing my hat," he said, stopping at the net. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes flickered — micro-expression recognition she'd learned from his own security team.

"It suits me better anyway." She fingered the drive in her pocket, the one containing everything. "I suppose you'll want this back."

"Elena —"

"Save it. I already forwarded the documents to the board." She stepped closer, the hat's shadow falling over both of them. "I wanted to see if you'd try to lie to my face one more time."

His smile didn't waver. It just... calcified. The person she'd loved for a decade evaporated, leaving something she didn't recognize at all.

"You were never just my wife," he said quietly. "You were the only person I couldn't read."

"And you were the only person I never really saw."

She placed the hat on the net between them and walked away, the clay crunching beneath her heels like broken glass.
