The Truth About Catfishing
Maya had been playing digital spy for three weeks, carefully watching Jake's Instagram stories, noting every gym selfie and coffee shop check-in. Her friends called it stalking; she called it research. At seventeen, you needed intel before making a move.
Then came the DM that changed everything. Jake's account messaged first. Her heart did that stupid flutter thing it always did when he walked past her locker. They'd been talking for two weeks when he suggested they meet at the arcade downtown.
"This is borderline insane," her best friend Chloe said while Maya applied lip gloss in the mirror. "What if he's catfishing? What if he's like, forty?"
"I saw his face on video chat," Maya lied. She hadn't. Their calls had been conveniently cancelled.
She arrived at the arcade wearing her favorite ripped jeans and nervous energy. Scanning the crowd, she spotted someone waving near the claw machines. But it wasn't Jake.
It was Jake's little brother, Tyler. A sixth grader.
"Maya?" Tyler looked guilty as hell. "Jake sent me. He said he couldn't bear coming here because he's actually dating Sarah now."
The arcade noise seemed to double. Someone was shouting at a broken machine. Game tokens scattered across the floor.
"Wait. You've been catfishing me for your brother?" Maya's voice cracked. "That's actually bull—"
"He said you seemed cool and he didn't want to hurt your feelings!" Tyler's face was bright red. "I was just trying to help."
Maya started laughing. She couldn't stop. It was ridiculous, it was humiliating, and somehow it was the most freeing thing that had happened all year. All that spy energy, all those overanalyzed messages, and she'd been talking to an eleven-year-old the whole time.
"Tell your brother," Maya said between laughs, "that he's a coward. And that you're actually better at conversation than he is."
She walked out feeling lighter than she had in weeks. Some crushes weren't meant to survive the light of day. That was fine. She had better things to bear than false hope and middle school games.
