The Tiny Sphinx's Secret

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on warm afternoons when the sun painted everything gold. That's when she found something extraordinary behind the old palm tree — a creature no bigger than a kitten, with the body of a fluffy cat and tiny wings.

"Hello there," Lily whispered, kneeling down.

The creature stretched and yawned. "I'm Cleo, a sphinx," she said in a voice like wind chimes. "Very nice to meet you."

Lily gasped. "A real sphinx? I thought sphinxes were huge and scary!"

Cleo laughed, her whiskers twitching. "That's what they want you to think. Most of us are quite small and friendly. But we do love riddles." Her eyes sparkled. "Want to play?"

"Yes!" Lily clapped her hands.

"What has golden scales but never swims in the ocean?" Cleo asked.

Lily thought hard. She remembered the small pond at the edge of the garden. "Is it... Grandma's goldfish?"

"Correct!" Cleo did a happy spin in the air. "Now come with me. There's someone I want you to meet."

They tiptoed to the garden pond, where a single orange goldfish glided through the water. But when Lily leaned closer, the goldfish spoke!

"I've been waiting for you, Lily," said the goldfish, whose name was Finnick. "I'm the keeper of small wishes."

Cleo landed on a lily pad. "Every garden has magic, but only kind hearts can find it. Today, we're planting something special."

Finnick splashed happily. "Close your eyes and make a wish for someone else!"

Lily thought of her friend Tom, who had been feeling lonely. "I wish Tom could find a magic friend too."

The palm tree above them rustled, even though there was no wind. A tiny seed drifted down into Lily's hand.

"Plant this where Tom plays," Cleo whispered. "And watch."

Lily did, and the next morning, Tom found his own tiny sphinx waiting for him beneath the playground trees.

That's how Lily learned that the best magic isn't about making wishes for yourself — it's about spreading wonder to others. And every day after school, she and Tom and their sphinx friends had adventures that nobody else would ever believe.

"Real magic," Cleo always said, "is just friendship wearing a sparkly disguise."
