The Tiny Sphinx of Sunny Beach

Lily loved collecting shells at Sunny Beach. One day, she found something strange half-buried in the sand. It wasn't a shell. It was a tiny stone creature with the body of a cat and the head of a person, no bigger than her thumb.

"A sphinx!" Lily gasped, remembering from her storybook at school. The little statue sparkled like gold in the sunlight.

She picked it up gently. As it rested in her warm palm, the tiny sphinx opened one eye. Then the other. It stretched its stone paws and yawned.

"Hello, small giant," the sphinx said in a voice like chiming bells.

Lily almost dropped it in surprise. "You're alive!"

"I have been sleeping for three thousand years," said the sphinx, whose name was Cleo. "I was once the guardian of the Great Library, guarding secrets and stories. But I became smaller and smaller until I was forgotten."

Lily's heart ached. "That's so sad. Do you have any friends?"

Cleo shook her tiny head. "Not for a very long time."

"Well," said Lily, "you have one now. And I know just where you'll love to live!"

She took Cleo home and placed her on a special shelf next to her favorite books. Every day, Lily read stories aloud, and Cleo would act them out, dancing on the pages. At night, Cleo told Lily amazing tales from ancient times—stories of pharaohs and pyramids, magic and mystery.

"The best treasure," Cleo said one evening, "isn't gold or jewels. It's sharing stories with a friend."

Lily looked at the tiny sphinx resting in her palm and smiled. She had found something better than any shell at the beach—a friendship that would last forever, no matter how small you are.
