The Thunder Ball Game

When dark clouds gathered over Oakville Park, ten-year-old Leo knew exactly what to do. He grabbed his favorite baseball and rushed to the old oak tree where his best friend Maya already waited.

"The Storm Team needs us!" Maya exclaimed, her eyes bright with excitement. Every summer storm brought the magical baseball game to life, and this time, something special was about to happen.

As the first crack of lightning flashed across the sky, the dusty baseball diamond began to glow. From behind home plate emerged a peculiar figure—Barnaby, a friendly zombie made entirely of old baseball gear! His body was shaped like baseballs stitched together, his glove was his face, and he moved with a clumsy but lovable wobble.

"Play ball!" Barnaby rumbled, his voice like rolling thunder.

Leo and Maya joined the Storm Team, playing alongside ghosts of baseball legends who appeared in flashes of lightning. Barnaby shuffled to first base, occasionally dropping his arm and reattaching it with a cheerful grunt. Whenever Leo hit the ball, lightning would strike nearby, making the ball fly faster and farther than normal.

But then Barnaby tripped over his own feet. Baseballs rolled everywhere as his body came apart. The magical game began to fade, the lightning growing distant.

"We have to help him!" Leo cried. He and Maya quickly gathered all the baseball parts and carefully stitched Barnaby back together. "We're teammates, Barnaby. We don't leave friends behind."

Reassembled and grinning, Barnaby hit the winning home run just as the rain began to fall. The magical players vanished into the clouds, but Barnaby remained real.

"I'll be back next storm," he promised, hugging Leo and Maya with his baseball-body arms.

That day, Leo learned that real teammates help each other, no matter how different they might be. And sometimes, the most extraordinary friends appear when lightning strikes—in the most unexpected ways.
