The Three-Second Mistake

Maya's hair was supposed to be her glow-up moment. She'd spent three hours perfecting the beach waves, watching tutorials on her iPhone until her eyes burned. This was it—finally, she'd talk to him at Jordan's pool party.

The August heat hit her like a wall as she walked in. Everywhere she looked, people were already swimming, laughing, existing with that effortless confidence she'd been faking since seventh grade. Her palms were literally sweating.

"Maya! You made it!" Jordan waved her over to the snack table. "We ordered pizza, but my mom also made this fancy spinach dip if you're feeling healthy."

Spinach dip. Great. Maya grabbed a chip, scooped way too much, and took a massive bite just as Jordan appeared beside her.

"Hey, I was hoping you'd come," he said, smiling that smile that made her stomach do actual gymnastics.

She smiled back, ready to finally say something normal, something cool, something that didn't make her want to dissolve into the pavement.

"So I was—" Jordan started, then stopped. His eyes widened. Just a fraction. "You have a little... um..."

Maya froze. The spinach. The entire universe narrowed down to what was definitely stuck between her front teeth.

"I was gonna ask if you wanted to go swimming," Jordan continued, like the amazing human he was. "But first, you might want to check a mirror."

The worst part? It wasn't even that bad. But then she heard it—the shutter sound. Someone's iPhone had captured the exact moment. The three seconds where she'd been smiling with a forest of green between her teeth.

"Delete it," she said, but she was already laughing. Because what else could she do?

By Monday, half the school had seen it. But somehow, it wasn't mortifying. It was just... funny. And when Jordan finally asked her to the homecoming dance, he did it with a bag of spinach as a joke.

Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the best stories. And Maya's hair looked amazing in the pictures, anyway.
