The Three Mascots

Maya's first day at Northwood High felt like walking into a reality show she hadn't auditioned for. The hallways stretched forever, packed with clusters of students who already seemed to know everyone except her. She clutched her schedule like a lifeline, her vintage oversized hoodie somehow feeling both too conspicuous and not protective enough.

"You're the new kid?" A guy with perfect hair and a varsity jacket appeared beside her at her locker. "I'm Tyler. Welcome to the jungle."

He introduced her to his friend group with the precision of someone explaining high school caste systems. "That's Sophie—she's basically Instagram royalty. And Marcus, he's got a full scholarship to UCLA next year."

Then came the weird part. "We've got this tradition," Tyler said, pointing at three painted murals on the gym wall. "Every freshman picks a mascot spirit animal. You're either a **bear** type—protective, loyal, maybe a little intense. Or a **fox**—clever, adaptable, kinda chaotic. Or a **bull**—straightforward, stubborn, but surprisingly gentle once you know them."

Maya stared at him. "This is definitely hazing, right?"

"Nah, it's stupid but harmless," Sophie laughed, appearing with two iced coffees. "I'm a fox. Tyler's such a bear, it's painful. What are you?"

The question hung there like something heavier than it should have been. Maya thought about how she'd transferred schools three times, how she'd learned to read rooms in seconds, how her mom said she was too adaptable for her own good. Always watching, always adjusting, never quite settling.

"I feel like..." She hesitated, then surprised herself. "Like maybe I don't have to pick just one. Maybe I'm all of them depending on the day."

Tyler looked at her for a long second, really looked at her, not like a specimen but like someone actually worth knowing. "That's actually the coolest answer anyone's given all year."

Her phone buzzed—a text from her mom asking how her first day was going. Maya typed back: Better than expected. Might be making actual friends. Then she added: Also, I think I'm finding my people here.

"So," Sophie said, linking arms with her like they'd known each other for years instead of minutes. "We're going to the football game Friday. You're coming. Non-negotiable."

Maya grinned, feeling something shift inside her—like maybe high school wouldn't be another temporary stop after all. Maybe this time, she'd actually stay long enough to figure out who she was becoming. "I'm in. But only if someone explains football first. I'm clueless."

"Deal," Tyler said. "Welcome to Northwood, Maya. You're gonna fit in just fine."
