The Things We Chase

The coffee shop was nearly empty at 11 PM, which was exactly why Mara kept coming back. Third date with Daniel, and she already knew this was the kind of relationship that would end badly—slowly, like a bandage pulled off hair by hair.

"You're like a cat," Daniel said, watching her over his untouched latte. "Always watching, always judging whether to stay or bolt."

Mara's hand tightened around her cup. "And you're the one who keeps chasing things that don't want to be caught."

He laughed, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Running—that's what we're all doing, isn't it? Running toward something, running away from something else."

Outside, the streetlamp flickered over the park where she'd seen the fox last week—sleek and orange, darting between parked cars at 3 AM, carrying something dead in its mouth. She'd thought: that's survival. That's what you do when you're hungry and the world's against you. You take what you can get.

"My ex had this dog," Daniel said abruptly. "Golden retriever. Would bring me dead birds like they were gifts. Like I should be grateful."

"What did you do?"

"I praised it. Pets are just mirrors, aren't they? They show us the parts of ourselves we're trying to forgive."

Mara felt something tighten in her chest. The way he looked at her now—expectant, hungry, like she was something he could pet into submission. That's what this was. Another dead bird laid at her feet, another person wanting to be loved for their brokenness instead of fixing it.

The fox had known what it was doing. No apologies.

"I should go," she said.

Daniel's face cracked open. "Stay. Please. I can be—"

"You can be exactly what you are." She stood up. "That's the problem."

The fox had moved on to better hunting grounds. She would too.
