The Terminal Gate

Maya found the strand of hair on his pillow — champagne blonde, nothing like her own dark curls. She held it between trembling fingers, her palm sweating against the silk sheets. Three years of marriage, and she'd never suspected.

The iPhone buzzed on the nightstand. His screen. Not hers. She'd never checked it before; trust had been their religion. But the hair changed everything.

She slid her thumb across the glass. No password. Messages from someone named V. Coordinates. Times. Meeting spots. Corporate files. Her stomach turned cold. He wasn't having an affair. He was a spy — and she was the mark.

She thought of the dinner parties they'd hosted, the late nights he'd spent "working" while she poured him wine. How he'd asked about her company's encryption protocols over breakfast. How he'd encouraged her to bring work home. Every intimate moment reconstructed as reconnaissance.

The shower started running upstairs. She had minutes. Maya grabbed her own phone, scrolled to her contact at the FBI. She'd send the evidence, then walk out. But something stopped her. Another message from V on his screen: *Target secured. Extraction tonight. Leave no loose ends.*

Her finger hovered over send. Then she thought of his laugh when she burned the toast. The way he held her during her mother's funeral. The genuine warmth in his eyes when she'd told him she wanted children.

Was any of it real?

She heard the water shut off. Maya deleted her half-typed message. Instead, she typed a new one to her company's security team, blind-copied her lawyer. Then she placed his iPhone exactly as she'd found it and walked to the closet, packed a single bag. Some betrayals, she realized, required more than revenge. They required survival.
