The Teddy Bear's Zombie Dance
Lily loved Saturday mornings. That's when she played padel with her dad in their backyard. She gripped her small blue racket and swung at the yellow ball. Thwack! It sailed over the net.
"Good one, champ!" Dad called out.
But something magical was about to happen. Lily's old teddy bear, Barnaby, sat on the garden bench watching. He was missing one button eye and had a patch on his tummy from when Lily's dog had chewed him. He'd been Lily's best friend since she was three.
Suddenly, a butterfly landed on Barnaby's nose. His fuzzy brown paw reached up—SWOOSH—to brush it away!
Lily gasped. "Dad! Did you see that?"
But Dad was inside getting lemonade. Lily crept closer. Barnaby stretched his stubby arms and yawned. Then, in the most surprising way, he stood up on his fluffy paws and started to dance.
Not a normal bear dance. No, Barnaby did the funniest, wobbliest zombie dance ever! His arms swung stiffly, his head tilted sideways, and he shuffled his feet like he was walking through honey. It looked like the zombie game Lily's big brother played on his iPhone, but instead of being scary, it was the silliest thing she'd ever seen.
Lily giggled. Barnaby stopped and looked at her with his one button eye.
"You can dance!" she whispered.
Barnaby nodded and did a little spin. He held out his fuzzy paw. Lily took it, and they danced together—padel racket and all—spinning under the morning sun.
When Dad came back with lemonade, Barnaby was frozen on the bench. But Lily knew the truth. Sometimes, when no one was looking, her bear would do his zombie dance.
That night, Lily hugged Barnaby tight. Magic was real. And it had been hiding in her own backyard all along.
Now, every Saturday, Lily leaves an extra cookie on the garden bench. Just in case Barnaby gets hungry after his dancing.
