The Teddy Bear's Midnight Adventure

Lily was running through the backyard, her bare feet splashing in puddles left by the morning rain. The water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight as she chased her best friend Sam toward the old oak tree.

"I'll beat you to the base!" Sam called out, waving what he called his "magic iphone"—a smooth gray rock he'd painted with glow-in-the-dark stars.

Lily giggled and sprinted faster. At the base of the oak tree stood her stuffed bear, Barnaby, propped up against the trunk as if guarding treasure. Barnaby had been her loyal companion since she was three, his brown fur worn soft from countless hugs.

"Let's play Zombie astronauts!" Sam suggested, his eyes dancing with excitement. "We have to save Barnaby from the space zombies!"

Lily grabbed Barnaby and held him close. "Don't worry, bear, we'll protect you!"

They pretended the garden hose was a water blaster that could melt imaginary zombies. Lily made swishing sounds as she sprayed zombie-fighting water in wide arcs. Sam marched with his magical iphone rock, chanting made-up spells that would banish the zombie creatures back to their planet.

"Zombies don't like friendship!" Sam declared solemnly. "That's why we always win."

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Mrs. Thompson from next door waved hello from her porch. She watched the children playing their imaginary game and smiled, remembering how she and her brother had played similar games when they were young.

"Time to come in, you two!" Lily's mom called from the back door. "Dinner's ready!"

Lily and Sam gathered their treasures—the magical iphone rock and Barnaby bear. They high-fived, exhausted but happy from their adventures.

As Lily got ready for bed that night, Barnaby bear sat on her nightstand, his button eyes seeming to twinkle in the nightlight. She knew that tomorrow, they would have new adventures, fight new imaginary zombies, and discover new magic in the ordinary world around them.

Some of the best adventures, she realized, happened right in her own backyard, with a bear who couldn't move but could somehow protect her from anything, a friend who made everything fun, and a rock that was magic just because they believed it was.

And that was the greatest magic of all.
