The Talent Pool

The office betting pool on who would be first to quit had reached $4,200. Elena's name wasn't on the board, but it should have been. Three years of mergers and 'synergy opportunities' had turned her into something that shuffled through cubicles like the walking dead—coffee-powered, eyes glazed, responding to emails with automatic efficiency while her soul quietly packed its bags.

She sat by the hotel pool during the mandatory corporate retreat, watching ripples spread across the turquoise water. Marcus from Accounting cannonballed in, sending water cascading over the edge. Everyone cheered. Elena checked her phone. Another message from David: *We need to talk.*

The zombie metaphor wasn't far off. She hadn't felt truly alive in months. Just input, output, repeat. Her relationship had become a series of missed connections and resentments silent as graves.

Then she saw the sphinx.

Not literally—though the hotel did have questionable ancient Egyptian decor—but Chloe, the new VP, sat alone on a lounge chair, immaculate in a white sundress, watching Elena with eyes that seemed to see everything. Chloe had risen through three companies in five years, leaving a trail of restructured departments and nervous breakdowns in her wake.

'You're thinking about jumping,' Chloe said, not a question. Her voice was smooth, dangerous. 'The pool. Everyone thinks about it.'

'I don't know what you mean.'

Chloe smiled, cat-like. 'Sure you do. The betting pool. The talent pool. The deep end. Which one are you afraid of?'

Elena's phone buzzed again. *I'm leaving. Key's under the mat.*

Something broke inside her—the numbness, the zombie-walk through expected motions. She stood up, toeing off her heels. The water looked impossibly blue, impossibly deep.

'None of them,' Elena said. She walked to the pool's edge. 'I'm not afraid anymore.'

And then she jumped.

The water closed over her head, cold and shocking and utterly real. For the first time in three years, she could breathe.
