The Swimming Zombie's Orange Secret

Lily loved summer. She loved the warm sun, the blue sky, and most of all, she loved swimming. Every day, she would race to the crystal lake behind her house, her bright orange towel flapping like a friendly flag.

One afternoon, while doing her best butterfly stroke, Lily saw something strange. A green figure was standing at the edge of the woods. It looked like a zombie! Lily's heart thumped faster. But then, she noticed something odd – this zombie wasn't scary at all. He was wearing swim trunks!

The zombie shuffled toward the water, holding something precious in his hands. An orange!

"H-hello?" Lily called out, treading water.

The zombie jumped. "Oh! I didn't see you there!" His voice was surprisingly gentle, not scratchy like old bones. "I'm Zed. I was just coming for a swim."

Lily swam closer. "You're a zombie who swims?"

"And I love oranges!" Zed held up the fruit proudly. "They make me feel less... zombie-ish. Want one? I have plenty."

From behind a tree, Zed pulled a whole basket of oranges. Lily laughed. This wasn't a scary monster – this was the silliest creature she'd ever met!

"I'm Lily," she said, swimming to shore. "Do you want to be friends?"

Zed's gray face lit up. "I've never had a friend before! Everyone runs away when they see me."

"That's because they don't know you like oranges AND swimming," Lily said wisely. "Those are the two best things in summer!"

Together, they spent the whole afternoon swimming and sharing oranges under the sun. Zed told Lily stories about the forest, and Lily taught Zed how to do a cannonball.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Lily learned something wonderful: things aren't always what they seem. Sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures just need a friend to see their true colors.

"Same time tomorrow?" Zed asked, peeling his third orange.

"You bet," Lily smiled. "Bring extra oranges!"

From that day on, the zombie who loved swimming and oranges became Lily's best friend. And whenever anyone asked about her unusual friend, Lily would just say, "Never judge a zombie by his cover – or his skin color. The best friends come in the most surprising packages!"
