The Swimming Zombie's Green Secret

Lily loved swimming more than anything. Every summer day, she'd dive into the sparkling blue water behind her house, pretending it was an enchanted ocean full of mermaids and treasure.

One afternoon, while doing her best underwater dolphin dance, something brushed against her leg. Lily popped up, spluttering water everywhere. Below the surface, something green and slow was drifting near the bottom.

It was a zombie! But not a scary one like in movies. This zombie had floppy seaweed hair, a gentle smile, and the saddest eyes Lily had ever seen. Instead of groaning, it waved shyly.

"Hello," Lily whispered. The zombie nodded and pointed at the reed basket floating nearby. Inside: fresh spinach from someone's garden.

The zombie scooped up handfuls of the spinach leaves. To Lily's amazement, as the creature ate, its green skin began to sparkle like emeralds. Its eyes brightened. The zombie wasn't sick or cursed—it was just hungry!

"You're not a zombie at all!" Lily realized. "You're a Water Spirit!"

The Spirit clapped happily and did a joyful spin, sending ripples across the pond. For weeks, Lily brought spinach and visited her new friend. They played swimming races and the Spirit taught Lily to blow bubbles like a fish.

One day, the Spirit explained everything in watery gurgles: it was the Guardian of the Pond, and spinach gave it the magic to keep the water crystal clear.

Lily learned that sometimes things that seem strange or scary are just misunderstood—and a little kindness (and spinach) can reveal the magic hiding underneath. Now every time Lily sees someone different or unusual, she remembers her swimming friend and wonders what wonderful secret they might be hiding.
