The Swimming Sphinx's Secret

Lily loved the water more than anything. Every Saturday morning, she'd beg her parents to take her to the old community pool, where she'd spend hours swimming from one end to the other, pretending she was a mermaid exploring a crystal palace.

One evening, during a special twilight swim, Lily noticed something strange. As the sun dipped below the horizon and the pool lights flickered on, she saw a shimmering shape form at the bottom of the deep end. Curious, she dove underwater for a closer look.

There, resting on the pool's mosaic tiles, was a tiny sphinx no bigger than her hand. Its wings sparkled like underwater diamonds, and instead of a lion's body, it had a shimmering fish tail!

The sphinx swam to Lily, its eyes glowing with warmth. In a voice that sounded like gentle bubbles, it spoke: "I am Marina, guardian of swimming pools. I've been waiting for someone who truly loves the water."

Lily's eyes widened. "You're real?"

"Real as the water you love," Marina said. "But I'm lonely. All children splash and play, but none truly listen to the water's songs. You do."

That began the most magical summer of Lily's life. Each evening, Marina taught her secrets: how to float without moving, how to understand what the waves were saying, how to make the water dance with her fingertips. In return, Lily shared stories of the human world, making Marina laugh with tales of school and ice cream flavors.

When summer ended, Marina had a gift for her friend. "Whenever you miss me, touch any water – pool, ocean, or even bathwater – and whisper my name. I'll hear you."

Lily learned that the best friends can be the most unexpected ones, and that magic exists wherever you look closely enough – even at the bottom of a swimming pool. Now, whenever she sees water shimmer, she smiles, knowing Marina is near, swimming in the depths, waiting for her next visit.
