The Swimming Sphinx's Secret

sphinxfriendswimming

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic on rainy afternoons. The dusty boxes held treasures from around the world—shiny shells, carved wooden animals, and mysterious old maps. But today, something twinkled in the corner behind a stack of books.

She pushed aside a leather trunk and gasped. A tiny sphinx, no bigger than her hand, crouched on a velvet cushion. Its wings were folded tight, and instead of the fierce look she'd seen in books, this little creature looked… sad.

"Hello there," Lily whispered.

The sphinx blinked its golden eyes. "Hello," it squeaked. "I'm Sophie."

"I'm Lily. Why are you sad?"

Sophie's wings drooped. "All the other sphinxes love flying and riddles. But I want to go swimming in the bathtub down the hall. The other sphinxes say sphinxes don't swim. They laughed at me."

Lily's eyes widened. "You want to go swimming? That's wonderful!"

"Wonderful?" Sophie's ears perked up. "You really think so?"

"Of course!" Lily gently scooped up the tiny sphinx. "Everyone's different. That's what makes things fun. Come on—I'll be your friend, and we'll go swimming together!"

In the bathroom, Lily filled the tub with warm water and bubbles. Sophie trembled at first, dipping one paw in, then another. Lily splashed encouragingly, making little waves.

"See? It's nice!"

Sophie took a deep breath and slid into the water. Her wings spread out like golden sails, and to her surprise, she floated! She kicked her paws and glided through the bubbles, laughing. "I'm doing it! I'm swimming!"

They played until the water grew cold, a human girl and a swimming sphinx, splashing and making up games. As Sophie dried off on the towel, she nuzzled Lily's cheek.

"Thank you for being my friend. You taught me that being different isn't bad—it's magical."

Lily hugged the tiny sphinx. "That's what friends do. They help each other discover new things."

From then on, whenever Lily visited the attic, Sophie was waiting. They'd go swimming, have bubble races, and sometimes Sophie would tell Lily riddles as they floated. And if any other sphinxes ever made fun of Sophie for liking water, she'd just smile, dip her paws in the tub, and say, "You don't know what you're missing—swimming is sphinx-tacular!"
