The Swimming Papaya's Secret

Koa lived on an island where papayas grew like golden suns. Every morning, she went **swimming** in the turquoise water, her legs kicking like a mermaid's tail. But this Tuesday, something magical happened.

A papaya floated by—not bobbing like fruit should, but **swimming** against the current! Koa rubbed her eyes. The papaya had tiny leaves that fluttered like wings. It turned its striped side toward her and winked.

"I'm Pip," it squeaked in a voice like bubbles. "And I need your help."

Koa's best friend, Mateo, had always said papayas were just fruit. Now here was one talking to her! Koa became a **spy** that very moment. She followed Pip through coral caves where fish painted pictures with their fins. They swam past a garden of anemones that hummed soft songs.

"The Great **Bull** Starfish has lost his glow," Pip explained sadly. "He guards our reef, but without his light, shadows are creeping in."

They found the Bull in a sandy cove. He was magnificent—huge and star-shaped, but his colors had faded to gray. Koa noticed something shiny caught in his folds. A piece of glittery plastic!

Gently, she pulled it free. The Bull's colors burst back—crimson, gold, and brilliant orange. He thanked her by sending up a fountain of rainbow bubbles that tasted like vanilla.

"You're a true **friend** to the sea," the Bull rumbled. "Ask for anything."

Koa thought carefully. "Could you help Mateo believe in magic?"

The Bull smiled with his whole body. The next day, when Mateo went swimming, a hundred papayas swam around him in heart shapes. His eyes grew wide as dinner plates.

"Sometimes," Koa whispered, "the most magical things are hiding in plain sight."

Now every summer, Koa and Mateo guard the reef together. And sometimes, if you're very lucky, you might spot them—two children and a swimming papaya, having tea with a starfish bull beneath the waves.
