The Swimming Cat's Secret Friend
Mittens was an orange tabby cat who hated water. Or so Lily thought until the day they discovered Moonlight Lake.
"Look, Mittens!" Lily cried, pointing at the crystal-clear water. "It's magical!"
To Lily's surprise, Mittens dipped one paw in, then another. Soon, the cat who refused bathwater was swimming gracefully, her fur flowing like seaweed in the gentle current.
"You're a swimming cat!" Lily laughed, snapping pictures with her iPhone to show her friends later.
But that's when the magic truly began. As Mittens paddled toward the center of the lake, something stirred beneath the water's surface. A green face bubbled up—not scary, just curious.
"Hello?" said the creature. It looked like a zombie from Lily's video games, but with kind eyes and a friendly smile. "I'm Zara. I've been sleeping in this lake for one hundred years."
Lily's iPhone slipped from her grip and splashed into the water. But instead of sinking, it glowed with golden light. Zara caught it gently.
"This device has powerful magic," Zara said. "It woke me from my enchanted sleep. Thank you."
Mittens swam right up to Zara and purred. The zombie's patchwork fingers scratched the perfect spot behind her ears.
"You're not scary at all," Lily whispered, realizing her video games had lied. "You're just lonely."
"Would you like to be my friend?" Zara asked hopefully. "I can teach Mittens to swim even better. And I know stories about this lake that no one else remembers."
That summer, the most unlikely friendship bloomed. A zombie who wasn't scary, a cat who wasn't afraid of water anymore, and a girl who learned that sometimes the things we fear are just friends we haven't met yet.
And every evening, Lily's iPhone would glow softly, capturing not just pictures, but memories of magic that only believers could see.
