The Sweetness of Ruin

poolpapayapadel

Elena watched him across the breakfast table on their final morning at the resort. Marcus was slicing into a papaya with practiced precision, the orange flesh glistening in the tropical sun. They'd come here to save their marriage, or at least that's what he'd told her when he booked the tickets. Now she knew the truth: he'd come here to say goodbye.

"You going to join me for padel today?" he asked, not looking up from his fruit. "One last match before we head back?"

She remembered how they used to play every Sunday morning, back when they still had Sundays together. Back when his phone didn't constantly buzz with messages from his executive assistant—the one he'd hired six months ago, the one who was twenty-six and brilliant and probably already knew about this trip. The one he was leaving her for.

"I think I'll sit by the pool," Elena said. "Enjoy the quiet."

He nodded, something like relief crossing his face. At least he wouldn't have to pretend for one more hour.

She watched him finish his breakfast, then walk toward the padel courts where his phone was already lighting up in his pocket. Elena stood up and walked to the infinity pool, its surface perfectly still. She slipped into the water, letting it surround her, thinking about how she'd never liked papaya before she met him. He'd introduced her to so many things, taught her to appreciate textures and flavors she'd never considered. Now she'd have to learn them all over again alone.

The water felt like forgiveness, or maybe just surrender. She floated on her back, looking up at the endless blue sky, understanding suddenly that this wasn't an ending. It was just the next thing, and she was still here, still whole, even if she'd have to learn what that meant now.
