The Sweetness of Ripe Things

The papaya sat on Elena's desk, perfectly yellow-orange, its skin freckled like the back of her mother's hands. A gift from Marcus, who'd returned from Bali with new wife and unsettling generosity.

"Still playing padel?" he'd asked, leaning against her cubicle wall, too comfortable for someone who'd stolen her promotion six months ago.

"Tuesday nights," she'd said, because what else could she say? They were still friends. Or something like it. The lines had blurred since he'd been fast-tracked to VP while she managed the team he'd abandoned.

The court smelled of rubber and desperation. Elena smashed the ball against the glass wall, her partner—some junior analyst—flinching. This was how it went now: Marcus invited her to corporate things. She attended. They pretended nothing had changed. He apologized with tropical fruit.

"Your serve," the analyst said.

Elena's phone buzzed on the bench. Marcus: *Dinner Saturday? Just us. Need to talk.*

She thought about the papaya waiting at home, how long it would take to ripen on the counter, how perfectly it would eventually soften into something sweet. How some things needed time, and others were ruined by it.

"You okay?" her partner asked.

"Fine," she said, and served the ball into the net. "I'm fine."
