Maya walked through the office like a zombie—eyes glazed, movements mechanical, soul quietly leaking out through her pores. Three years of climbing the corporate pyramid had left her hollow, and now even the victories felt like defeats.

She caught Julian watching her from his cubicle again. The way he tracked her movements with those cold, methodical eyes—it made her skin prickle. She'd started deleting files from her desktop before meetings, password-protecting everything like she was living in a spy novel instead of a marketing firm. Maybe she was paranoid. Maybe Julian was just doing his job.

At lunch, she sat alone with her papaya, carefully slicing into the salmon-orange flesh. The sweetness made her throat ache, reminding her of vacation days she couldn't afford to take, of the version of herself who still believed in work-life balance. She'd started buying exotic fruit like it was a form of rebellion.

"You should come play padel with us," Chloe had said that morning, touching Maya's arm with that perfect, manicured hand. "It's where all the real networking happens. The partners are there every Thursday."

Maya had declined, like she always did. She knew what happened on that padel court. The same thing that happened at the expensive dinners and the weekends at the cabin. You paid your entrance fee—not with money, but with pieces of yourself you could never get back. The pyramid demanded fresh souls for its foundation.

That evening, as she passed the sports complex on her way home, she saw them through the glass walls. Julian and Chloe, laughing, swinging their racquets with easy confidence. Two of them, framed in the golden light of success, moving through levels she couldn't access.
