The Sweetness of Betrayal

The orange ball sailed across the padel court at sunset, a bright speck against deepening purple sky. Elena watched it arc toward her, the familiar rhythm of the game momentarily distracting her from what she'd learned that morning.

Her running shoes squeaked against the synthetic surface as she pivoted, returning the shot automatically. Muscle memory. Just like her friendship with Marco had become—automatic, familiar, something she never questioned.

Until yesterday.

'You're playing differently,' Marco called from across the net, wiping sweat from his forehead. He'd always moved with that predatory grace, even in casual games. Now she saw it differently.

She'd found the transmitter hidden in his office plant. A listening device, sophisticated and expensive. Not corporate espionage—something worse. Marco was a spy, and their friendship had been his cover story for three years.

'Just tired,' Elena replied, though fatigue wasn't what tightened her throat.

Marco's phone buzzed. He checked it,脸色 paling slightly. 'Rain check? I need to take this.'

As he gathered his things, Elena peeled the orange she'd brought for their post-game snack. The citrus spray hit her senses—sharp, bright, honest. Unlike everything between them now.

'See you tomorrow?' Marco asked, already halfway to the gate.

'Sure,' she said, watching him walk away. 'Tomorrow.'

The orange segments tasted sweet on her tongue. Tomorrow she'd report him. Tomorrow their friendship would end. But for tonight, she sat alone on the bench, finishing her snack, letting herself remember what it felt like to trust someone completely.
