The Sweetest Rot

The papaya sat on the counter, its skin mottled with yellow bruises like a fading bruise. Elena had bought it yesterday, when they still believed this weekend trip might save them.

Marcus poured himself more water from the pitcher. The condensation on the glass made his fingers slip. He couldn't meet her eyes.

'Your phone,' she said.

He jumped. His iphone buzzed against the marble countertop, that insistent thrum that had been interrupting their conversations for weeks. He didn't pick it up. Didn't need to. They both knew who texted at midnight on a Saturday.

'The papaya's gone bad,' she said instead. 'Like everything else in this house.' She sliced into the fruit anyway. The knife made a wet, sucking sound. Inside, the flesh was dark and fermenting. Sweet in that particular way that comes just before rot.

'El—'

'Don't.' She pushed the plate away. 'Just don't.'

They'd come to the lake house to fix what was broken between them. Instead, they'd spent three days avoiding each other in rooms too small for honest conversation. The water outside lapped against the dock, relentless and indifferent.

His phone lit up again. A preview of the message appeared on the lock screen. Two words that ended everything.

Elena stood up, her chair scraping against the floor. She walked to the sink and dumped the spoiled papaya into the disposal. The motor groaned. She turned on the water, watched it wash away the fruit they'd never eat together, and finally looked at him.

'I hope she likes overripe fruit,' she said.

The water kept running. He still didn't move.
