The Sweetest Betrayal

runningspypadel

The running track circled the padel courts like a moat around a castle. Elena had been running laps for forty-five minutes, her breath matching the rhythmic thwack of racquet balls against glass walls. She wasn't really watching the players—she was supposed to be watching Victor Chen, the tech executive whose company her firm had been hired to dismantle through competitive intelligence. Legal, she told herself. Just business.

But then there was Julian, Victor's padel partner, who laughed with his head thrown back, who served with a ferocity that made something tighten in Elena's chest. Three weeks of surveillance, and she'd learned more about Julian's backhand than Victor's trade secrets. She'd learned Julian preferred morning matches, wore the same lucky jersey, and bought empanadas from the cart afterward for both of them.

"You're going to run a groove in that track," Julian had said last Tuesday, finding her at the fence. He'd offered her a racquet. "Spying on us, or just bored?" The joke had landed too close to home, and she'd laughed, a brittle sound.

Now Elena watched Victor lean in close to Julian between points, saying something that made Julian's face fall. A contract dispute, maybe. Or something else. Elena's handler had mentioned a mole in Victor's operation—someone selling secrets to a competitor. Julian's brother worked for that competitor.

She could finish the job. Deliver the file. The spy work was done; she had enough to bury Victor's company. But instead she found herself at the padel club's front desk, requesting a court reservation for next Tuesday morning. Running from the truth was exhausting. Sometimes you had to stop running and let whatever was going to catch you, catch you.

The woman at the desk smiled. "You Julian's friend? He asked about you. Said to save his favorite court."

Elena's fingers tightened on the counter. She'd delete the file in the morning. Some betrayals weren't worth the price.
