The Sweetest Betrayal

papayafriendpalmspy

The papaya sat on Maya's desk, perfectly ripe and freckled with gold—a peace offering from Elena. They'd been friends for six years, since they were both junior analysts at the firm, eating lunch together and complaining about their bosses. Now Elena was a VP, and Maya was wondering why her confidential merger proposals kept leaking to competitors.

Maya traced the curve of the fruit with her thumb. Last week, she'd noticed Elena's palm pressing against the office window, watching Maya through the glass as she left a meeting with legal. That same evening, Maya's home security system had logged an unauthorized access attempt—Elena's guest code, which Maya had given her years ago, after that terrible breakup when Elena had slept on her couch for weeks.

"You're overthinking it," Elena had said over drinks last night, her hand covering Maya's on the table, warm and familiar. "Paranoia will destroy you."

But Maya wasn't paranoid. She was a spy now, too.

She'd hired the private investigator on Tuesday. The photos arrived this morning: Elena meeting with the competition at a hotel bar. Elena handing over a thick file. Elena smiling.

Maya picked up her phone and typed out the message to corporate security. Then she sliced the papaya open, revealing its shocking orange flesh, black seeds like accusations. She took a bite. It was perfectly sweet, perfectly rotten. She'd known Elena was ambitious. She'd known Elena would do anything to climb. But she'd thought—she'd really believed—that their friendship meant something more.

Her palm curled around the knife. She would report Elena. She would testify. She would watch her friend's career implode.

And tomorrow, she would find someone else to eat lunch with. Someone who didn't taste like betrayal.
