The Sweet Spot

The padel ball cracked against the glass wall, that satisfying sound echoing through the court at 7 PM on a Tuesday. Elena wiped sweat from her forehead, her breath coming in rhythmic bursts. This was her sanctuary now—the hour between work and whatever waited at home, the only time she could remember who she'd been before.

"You're still aiming too low," a familiar voice said from the sidelines.

She turned. Marco stood there in his expensive suit, holding a plastic container with that smile that had once made her drop her guard. "Your backhand could destroy people if you let it."

"Friend," she said, the word landing heavy between them, "you don't get to critique my serve anymore."

Three months ago, they'd been climbing different sides of the same corporate pyramid—her in creative, him in strategy. They'd called themselves friends, though the boundaries had blurred during late nights proofreading each other's proposals, during weekend padel matches that turned into drinks that turned into his hotel room.

Then came the restructuring. Marco had parachuted into her department as interim director. The same voice that'd whispered in her ear now delivered performance reviews. The hands that'd memorized her body now signed off on her team's firing rounds.

"I brought you dinner," he said, stepping onto the court. "That spinach salad you like from the place downtown."

The spinach—of course he remembered. That first night they'd worked late, he'd watched her pick the leaves out of her sandwich with meticulous care. "You're particular about what you let inside yourself," he'd said then, and the double meaning had made her cheeks burn.

Now she stared at the container. The corporate pyramid demanded sacrifices, and apparently Marco had decided their whatever-it-was was among them. Better to pretend it never happened than risk the appearance of impropriety.

She took the container. "Thanks."

"Elena—"

"Your backhand sucks too," she said. "Want to play?"

Something softened in his expression. For a moment, the pyramid dissolved. He took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves.

"Winner buys the next round of spinach."
