The Supplement Spy

Maya stood before the bathroom mirror, vitamin C gummy in hand, psyching herself up for third period. The social hierarchy at Northwood High felt like a pyramid she couldn't climb—popular kids at the top, everyone else scattered below, and her somewhere near the bottom, clutching her backpack like a shield.

"You're being paranoid," she told her reflection. But that didn't stop her from feeling like a spy in her own life, constantly scanning the cafeteria for threats, decoding glances from the popular table, analyzing Instagram stories like classified intelligence.

Then there was Leo. The sphinx of 11th grade. He sat with the arts crowd but walked alone. His style shifted monthly—grunge one week, preppy the next. He was a riddle she couldn't solve, and frankly, she was tired of trying.

Until the day their paths literally collided near the gym doors. He'd been running—like, actually running, headphones in, sweat staining his gray tee. She'd been rushing to AP Bio, vitamin stash rattling in her pocket.

"Sorry," he'd said, breathless. "I'm Leo."

"Maya."

"You take those gummy things too?"

She blinked. "The what?"

He pointed to her pocket. "Vitamins. My mom's obsessed. Says I need them for running."

And just like that, the sphinx spoke first.

They'd been talking for weeks now—mostly about his track meets, her anxiety about college apps, and whether those gummy vitamins actually did anything. But standing by her locker today, something felt different.

"Hey," he said, leaning against the locker next to hers. "There's this party Friday. At Jake's."

Her stomach did that thing. "Oh. Cool."

"You should come."

The pyramid didn't feel so tall suddenly.

"Yeah," Maya said, already planning her outfit. "I will."

"Bet you won't beat me there," Leo grinned, already in running stance.

"You're on."

Sometimes the best secrets aren't the ones you're spying from afar. They're the ones that find you when you least expect them.
