The Sunshine Zombie
Tommy found Zombey behind the old oak tree, sitting sadly in the shadows. Zombey wasn't scary at all — he was a small, greenish creature with patchy clothes and the sweetest smile Tommy had ever seen.
"Why are you sitting in the dark?" Tommy asked, dropping his baseball glove on the grass.
Zombey sighed. "The sun makes me feel tingly. I've forgotten how to play."
Tommy's eyes widened. "That's because you need sunshine vitamins! My mom says oranges have special sunshine vitamins inside them."
He dug into his lunch bag and pulled out a bright orange. "Here, try this!"
Zombey took a tiny bite. His eyes sparkled. "It tastes like sunshine!"
Tommy grinned. "Want to learn baseball? It's the best sunshine game ever!"
For weeks, Tommy taught Zombey how to throw and catch. They played every day in the golden afternoon light. Zombey's greenish skin turned rosy and healthy. He learned to run fast and hit the baseball so far it soared over the fence.
One day, the other kids watched from afar. "Is that... a zombie?" asked little Maya, clutching her teddy bear.
Zombey stepped forward shyly. "I'm Zombey. I love baseball and oranges. Want to play?"
Maya's eyes lit up. "Yes!"
Soon, all the children joined their game. Nobody was afraid anymore. They saw what Tommy had discovered all along — Zombey wasn't different in a bad way. He was different in a wonderful way.
That summer, Zombey became the town's best baseball player. He taught everyone that sometimes, the things we think are scary are just waiting for someone to help them find their sunshine.
Tommy and Zombey remained best friends forever, proving that kindness and friendship are the most powerful magic of all.
