The Sunday Game

hatfriendiphonepadel

Elena smoothed the creases in her father's fedora, the worn **hat** now a repository for three years of grief, before stepping onto the **padel** court. Sunday mornings with Marcus had been sacred since the funeral. He was more than a **friend**; he was the architect of her return to the living.

But today, Marcus's **iPhone** lay face-up on the bench during their water break, its screen illuminated with a message that stopped Elena's heart: "She'll never find out about us - S." Elena recognized the initials instantly—Sarah, her widow support group mentor, the woman who'd held her through the darkest nights, who'd become family.

The ball hit Elena's racquet with hollow thuds. Each volley was a question; each return, an accusation. When Marcus's phone buzzed again—photos this time, intimate and undeniable—Elena served straight into the net, the ball skittering away like her fractured trust.

"What's wrong?" Marcus asked, genuine concern etching his features. He reached for her shoulder, and she flinched.

Elena picked up the phone, wordlessly showing him the screen. Marcus's face crumbled. "It's not what you think. Sarah is... she's been helping me plan something."

"A surprise?" Elena's voice cracked, hollow. "For who?"

"For you." Marcus knelt on the court, withdrawing a small velvet box from his bag. "I wanted to ask if you'd... if we could... Elena, I'm in love with you. Sarah's been helping me figure out how to tell you."

The revelation hit like a physical blow: Marcus wasn't betraying her with Sarah; he was preparing to cross the one boundary they'd never discussed. The photos were consultation shots for the ring design.

Elena's hat slipped from her head as laughter and tears intertwined, bitter and sweet. Some truths shatter; others reassemble the pieces into something terrifyingly new. She looked at Marcus—really looked at him—and saw what had been hiding in plain sight all along.
