The Summer We Learned to Float

Margaret stood at the bathroom counter, her morning ritual unchanged for forty years. The same orange bottle, the same small white tablets — her vitamin C supplements, just as her mother had prescribed during those long-ago winters when everyone in town was coughing. Some habits outlast the people who taught them to you.

She picked up the framed photograph on the windowsill, edges softened with time. Two girls in modest bathing suits, hair slicked back, grinning at the camera as if they'd just discovered the secret to happiness. The old community pool, 1957. Margaret and Eleanor.

They'd been best friends since third grade, united by their love for the public pool where Eleanor's mother worked as a cashier. Every summer morning, they'd arrive at dawn, helping Eleanor's mother unlock the gates before the sun had properly risen. The water would be glass-smooth, reflecting the pinkening sky like a mirror held up to heaven.

"You'll never learn to swim if you don't trust the water," Eleanor had said, the summer they turned twelve. Margaret had been afraid, her feet firmly planted on the shallow end's concrete bottom. But Eleanor, always braver, had floated on her back like she belonged there, arms spread like she was embracing the whole world.

"Just let go," Eleanor said. "The water holds you up."

That lesson had carried Margaret through seventy years of letting go — of children who'd grown and flown, of Arthur who'd passed twelve years ago, of the house that had become too big. Now she sat in her daughter's guest room, watching her granddaughter Emma prance around in a new swimsuit.

"Grandma, will you come swimming with us?" Emma asked, bouncing with that particular energy of the young.

Margaret smiled, setting down her vitamin bottle. The photograph on the windowsill showed two girls who'd had their whole lives ahead of them, who'd trusted that the water would hold them up. And it had.

"Yes," she said. "Your grandma Margaret knows a thing or two about floating."
