The Summer of Sink or Swim

The problem with being the new girl at Crestwood Country Club wasn't the polo shirts or the weird unspoken rule about never mentioning your dad's job. It was padel.

"You're coming, right?" Chloe asked, flipping her perfectly straightened hair. "Saturday mixer. Everyone's gonna be there."

"Yeah," I lied. "Wouldn't miss it."

Friday night, I YouTube-ed "how to play padel" until my eyes burned. It looked like tennis married squash and they had a baby that required zero coordination whatsoever. I was cooked.

Saturday arrived, and I was internally spiraling. That's when Mittens, Mrs. Chen's overweight orange cat, decided the padel court was his new throne.

"Shoo," I whispered, clutching a borrowed racket. Mittens stared at me with absolute judgment. "Please, I'm already about to embarrass myself in front of the entire junior class."

He ignored me. Of course.

"Maya! You up?" It was Lucas, the cute junior I'd been lowkey crushing on since orientation. He was walking over with Chloe and the rest of the popular crew.

Panic time. I swung my racket dramatically at Mittens, thinking I'd gently nudge him away. Instead, I somehow managed to launch myself backward, trip over my own feet, and face-plant directly into the court's decorative fountain.

The worst part? It wasn't even deep. I was literally swimming in two feet of water, fully clothed, while Mittens observed from his new perch on the bench.

Everyone stared. Then Lucas cracked up. Not mean-laughing, but genuine laughter. Soon, the whole group joined in.

"Okay, that was legendary," Chloe said, helping me up. "You're definitely coming to the party tonight."

"I'm literally soaking wet," I said, dripping fountain water everywhere.

"Even better," Lucas grinned. "Now you have a story."

And just like that, I wasn't the new girl anymore. I was the girl who bodyslammed a fountain while fighting a cat. It wasn't how I planned to make friends, but somehow, it worked. Sometimes you have to sink before you learn to swim.
