The Summer My Phone Almost Died

The baseball dugout smelled like stale bubblegum and teenager anxiety. I tugged my Yankees cap lower, trying to disappear before Coach Miller noticed I'd been sitting on the bench for six innings. My hair was doing that thing where it poofed out in humidity—an absolute disaster since I'd spent twenty minutes trying to look effortless for Jordan.

'You're up, Kennedy,' someone yelled.

My stomach dropped. I grabbed my bat and jogged to the plate, iphone in my back pocket pressing against me like a lucky charm I couldn't actually use. Jordan was watching from the bleachers. This was it—the moment I either became a legend or died of embarrassment.

The pitch came. Fast. I swung.

CRACK.

The ball sailed toward right field. I took off running, rounding first base like my life depended on it. Then I saw it—the massive golden retriever that had somehow wandered onto the field, chasing my ball like it was the greatest thing that ever happened.

The dog caught up to it just as the right fielder did. Chaos erupted. Players were laughing. The umpire was shouting. And there I was, standing between second and third base, watching a golden retriever play tug-of-war with a baseball.

Then came the water—massive sprinklers erupting from the ground, soaking everything and everyone. Jordan jumped up from the bleachers, laughing so hard she was crying. I stood there, drenched, my hair completely wrecked, watching a dog win my baseball game.

'Nice hit!' Jordan called out, pulling her phone from her pocket. 'But I think that dog's the MVP.'

I walked back to the dugout soaking wet, grinning like an idiot. My hair was a mess. I was probably going to get benched. But Jordan had finally noticed me.

Sometimes the best moments happen when everything goes completely wrong.
