The Summer I Learned to Surface

The pool was packed, as usual. I sat on the edge, feet dangling in the cool water, clutching my iPhone like a lifeline. My thumbs moved automatically, doom-scrolling through everyone's perfect summer while mine was basically just me watching from the sidelines.

Again.

Across the pool, the baseball game was getting heated. Jason's team versus the summer league kids. I'd been pretending to check nonexistent notifications for twenty minutes, actually watching Jason through my peripheral vision. He was at bat, swinging that bat like his life depended on it.

Strike three. His shoulders slumped.

"You gonna swim or just marinate your feet?"

I jumped, nearly dropping my phone in the water. Maya. She was already in her bikini, dripping wet, looking like she'd been swimming for hours. Her dark hair was plastered to her face, but she was grinning like she knew something I didn't.

"I'm good," I mumbled, already reaching for my phone again. The safety of the screen. The controlled world of filtered photos and scheduled posts.

"You've been running from that pool all summer," she said, tilting her head. "What's the worst that could happen?"

I looked at the water. Then at Jason, who was now in the pool, laughing with his friends, completely over his strikeouts. Then back at my phone, where some influencer was captioning a sunset photo with "live laugh love."

Something snapped.

I handed Maya my iPhone. "Hold this."

"Bold move," she raised an eyebrow but took it.

I dove.

The water shocked me awake. For a second, I couldn't breathe, couldn't see, just the rush of bubbles and the muffled sounds of pool chaos. Then I broke the surface, gasping, and Maya was laughing, and Jason was swimming over, and suddenly I wasn't watching anymore. I was in it.

"Finally decided to join us?" Jason asked, grinning.

"Shut up," I splashed him, and for the first time all summer, I wasn't just surviving. I was actually swimming.
