The Summer I Figured It Out

The padel court at the country club was where everything changed that summer. I was sixteen, awkward in my skin, and convinced everyone was watching me fail. Again.

"You've got this, Maya," said Leo, my partner for the tournament. He was sweet, the kind of guy who'd give you his hoodie when you were cold. I'd had a crush on him since eighth grade, obviously.

Our opponents? Jenna "The Fox" Chen and Marcus "Bear" Williams. The undisputed social royalty of our high school. Jenna with her sly smile and endless gossip, Marcus with his towering frame and easy laugh that made everyone want to be his friend.

The match started, and I was in my head—overthinking every shot, every movement. Meanwhile, Jenna was playing like she had nothing to prove, calling out scores with that confidence I wished I owned.

"You good?" Leo asked during a break, handing me a water bottle.

"Yeah, just... it's the Sphinx situation from chemistry," I lied. Mr. Henderson's impossible riddle problem that had half the class stressing.

Leo nodded. "That's literally everyone's mood right now."

We ended up losing, but somehow, it didn't matter. Later that night, we all ended up at the pool party—Jenna, Marcus, me, Leo, everyone. The water reflected string lights, and someone's playlist bumped low bass.

I found myself sitting on the pool edge with my feet in the water, talking to Jenna of all people. Turned out The Fox was just as insecure as I was—worried about college apps, her parents' expectations, all of it.

"You're not terrible at padel, you know," she said, surprising me. "You just think too much."

"Same," I admitted.

Marcus and Leo joined us, and suddenly the four of us were planning to study for the Sphinx problem together. The social lines I'd spent years building up in my head weren't real. They never had been.

Sometimes growing up means realizing the people you thought had it all figured out are just as lost as you are. And that's actually kind of beautiful.
