The Summer I Bleached My Soul

The bottle said 'Sunset Orange' but my bathroom mirror said 'carrot accident.' I stared at my reflection, hair the color of a traffic cone, and wondered if this was what reinvention felt like. Or if I'd just ruined everything two weeks before sophomore year.

My phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up about Jordan's party tonight. The one I'd been ghosting because I wasn't ready. Because last year I was the kid who sat alone at lunch, the one who let Miller call me 'Samantha' even though I'd gone by 'Sam' since sixth grade. The one who never spoke up.

Buster, my ancient chocolate lab, nudged my knee with his wet nose. His tail thumped against the bathtub like a metronome. Mom had rescued him from a shelter three years ago, the same week she sat me down and said sometimes you have to choose your own name, your own life.

'You think this is it, bud?' I asked him. 'You think this is the moment?'

Buster sneezed.

I grabbed my phone. *I'm coming.*

Jordan's house was already vibrating when I got there. Kids I'd known forever but never really talked to. Miller in the corner, radiating that energy that makes everyone feel small. I took a breath, went for the punch bowl.

'Whoa.' Someone behind me. 'Sam?'

I turned. It was Riley, the girl who sat behind me in English, who'd complimented my writing once when she thought I was asleep. 'Your hair... it's actually kind of sick.'

'Yeah, well.' I shrugged. 'Decided to stop waiting for permission to exist.'

She laughed. Not mean. Real. 'Same. I mean, not the hair, but...' She gestured to her own newly shaved head. 'Fresh start, right?'

Miller materialized, smirk ready. 'What is this, some kind of -'

'Buster!' someone yelled from the backyard.

I froze. That was my dog's name.

'No, literally,' Riley said, pointing. 'There's a bull dog loose in the neighborhood!'

We all rushed outside. A bulldog was trotting down the street, wearing a fluorescent orange collar. A family was chasing it, looking panicked.

Without thinking, I whistled - the same specific pattern I used for Buster. The bulldog stopped, turned, and trotted right over to me like we'd known each other forever.

'Oh my god,' the mom gasped. 'How did you do that?'

'I have a dog,' I said, suddenly aware everyone was watching. 'Sometimes you just have to know what they're actually saying, not what you think they should be.'

Riley was looking at me different. Miller looked like he'd swallowed something sour.

'That was honestly kind of legendary,' she said.

'Totally unplanned,' I admitted.

'Wanna get out of here? There's this spot by the creek...'

I glanced back at my reflection in Jordan's window. Orange hair, new name, first potential friend. Maybe reinvention wasn't about becoming someone else. Maybe it was about finally becoming yourself.

'Yeah,' I said. 'Let's go.'
