The Summer I Became Visible

I'd spent freshman year perfecting the art of being nobody. Sit in the back, wear muted colors, never raise your hand. Exist in the margins like a watermark — visible but somehow not there at all. My social skills were basically non-existent unless you counted awkward nodding as a conversation technique.

Then everything changed because of a stupid dare.

"Lia, seriously, you have to **spy** on them," Maya pressed, shoving my phone toward me. "Just see what they're saying about us."

The "them" in question were the popular crowd who'd claimed our favorite lunch spot under the oak tree. I'd been **running** from confrontation all year, but something about Maya's desperate eyes made me cave.

I crept toward the tree, heart hammering like I was about to defuse a bomb instead of eavesdropping on high school drama. But I never made it there.

A streak of orange fur flashed across my path — some random neighborhood **cat** chasing something through the school grounds. I stumbled, my phone flying out of my hand and skidding across the grass. Right toward the popular group.

Great. Now I'd literally be seen.

A girl with perfect curls and a vintage band tee picked it up. "This yours?"

I nodded, feeling my face burn. "Yeah. Thanks."

Instead of mocking me or walking away, she smiled. "I'm Riley. You're Lia, right? You sit behind me in English."

The **fox** appeared later that week — not literally, but as Riley's code name for our secret operation. We'd discovered we both loved abandoned places and urban exploration, and now we were **running** around the city at sunset, exploring forgotten corners most people ignored.

"Call me **Fox**," Riley'd said when I asked why she never used her real name on our adventures. "Sly, adaptable, and surprisingly good at getting into places we shouldn't be."

Turned out I wasn't a watermark after all. I was just waiting for someone to notice me. And sometimes the bravest thing isn't staying invisible — it's letting yourself be seen.
