The Summer Everything Changed

Emma's first day as a lifeguard at the neighborhood pool wasn't exactly the glamorous summer she'd imagined. The pool was basically just a big bathtub filled with screaming kids and too much chlorine, and her uniform made her look like a walking highlighter.

"You've got something in your teeth," Jake said, leaning against the snack bar counter. He was the kind of cute that made her forget basic social skills.

Emma froze. "Spinach?"

"Worse." He grinned. "Blue popsicle. From, like, three hours ago."

Her face burned. This was it—the moment her summer became a complete disaster. But then his cat, Marshmallow, jumped onto the counter and head-butted her arm, and Jake didn't even seem annoyed about the spinach/popsicle situation anymore.

They ended up watching zombie movies on the pool's ancient TV after her shift, the cable connection fuzzy enough that the zombies looked like they were glitching. "So why lifeguarding?" Jake asked during the commercial break.

Emma shrugged. "Parental pressure. They think it builds character."

"Building character is just code for doing stuff we hate."

Something about the way he said it made her feel seen—like, really seen, not just the lifeguard girl with spinach in her teeth. The summer stretched ahead, full of possibility and zombie movie marathons and maybe, just maybe, figuring out who she actually was outside everyone else's expectations.

And maybe, she thought as Marshmallow purred against her leg, that was enough.
