The Structure of Regret

The corporate **pyramid** scheme had collapsed three months ago, but Elena still wore the beige **hat** everywhere—a nervous habit she'd picked up during those desperate weeks of recruitment meetings. It was her armor against the world.

"You look like you're waiting for a train that's never coming," Marcus said, sliding into the booth across from her. He set a glass of **water** on the table; condensation already wept down the sides.

Elena hadn't seen him since the FBI raid. They'd been more than colleagues once—confidants, almost lovers, until ambition had carved its canyon between them. "I heard you took a deal."

"The **cable** company offered immunity for testimony." Marcus traced patterns on the table. "I did what I had to do, Elena. We both knew this was coming."

"You sold us out."

"I saved myself. There's a difference."

Outside, rain slashed against the diner window. Elena remembered the night they'd stood on her balcony, both drunk on optimism and cheap wine, promising they'd build something real together—something honest. Instead, they'd built a house of cards predicated on lies, and when the winds came, Marcus had been the first to run.

"We were supposed to be **friend**s," she said softly. "That meant something once."

"Means nothing now." Marcus's phone buzzed. He glanced at it, then stood. "I'm getting married next month. In Portland."

Elena laughed—dark humor, sharp as broken glass. "Of course you are. Fresh start, new sins."

"You could come. Start over too."

She touched the brim of her hat, the fabric worn smooth from her fingers. "Some things don't wash clean. Some stains are permanent."

Marcus left without looking back. Elena watched his silhouette dissolve into the rain. The waitress arrived with coffee, steam curling like ghosts between them. Outside, the storm continued its relentless drumming against the glass, and somewhere beneath the earth, water found its way through every crack, patient and inevitable as regret.
