The Stormy Night Wish

Leo loved his pet goldfish, Goldie, more than anything in the world. Every day after school, he would rush home to feed her and watch her swim round and round in her glass bowl on his windowsill.

One rainy afternoon, while running away from the neighborhood bullies who teased him for being the smallest boy in class, Leo discovered something magical in the attic. An old purple hat with silver stars sat on a dusty trunk. When he put it on, something amazing happened.

Outside, lightning flashed across the dark sky. The thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. Suddenly, Goldie began to glow with a shimmering golden light!

"Leo!" Goldie spoke in a tiny, musical voice. "That hat is magic! It grants one special wish—but only during lightning strikes! Quick, make your wish!"

Leo's heart raced. He could wish for anything! He could wish to be big and strong so the bullies would stop teasing him. He could wish for superpowers or mountains of candy.

Another bolt of lightning illuminated the room. Goldie's glow grew brighter.

"Hurry, Leo! The magic won't last!"

Leo looked at Goldie swimming happily in her bowl. He thought about how much he loved her, and how she never cared that he was small. She just loved him for being kind and gentle.

"I wish..." Leo took a deep breath. "I wish that everyone could see with their hearts, not just their eyes!"

The hat sparkled, and Goldie glowed so bright that Leo had to close his eyes. When he opened them, the storm had passed. The hat looked ordinary again.

The next day at school, something wonderful happened. When the bullies approached Leo, instead of running away, he stood tall and smiled at them. They looked surprised—and for the first time, they really saw him. Not the small boy, but the brave, kind person he was.

Leo learned that the magic wasn't in the hat or even in the wish. The real magic was inside him all along.
