The Stormy Night Friend
Max peeked through his bedroom curtains, watching the storm dance across the sky. CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed, turning the dark night bright as day for just a heartbeat. Most kids would hide under their covers during storms, but Max loved them. They felt like magic.
Then he saw it—a slow, shuffling figure in his backyard. Max's heart thumped. Was it a zombie? He'd heard about zombies in scary stories, but this one looked different. It was wearing rainbow pajamas and holding a stuffed rabbit.
The zombie stopped and looked up at Max's window, then waved—a friendly, awkward wave.
Max opened his window. "Hello?"
"Hi," said the zombie. "I'm Zed. I'm not very good at being scary."
"That's okay," Max called down. "I'm not very good at sleeping during storms. Want to come up?"
Zed floated up—magic!—and sat on Max's bed. "I was walking around, looking for friends. Everyone runs away when they see me."
"Running away?" Max shook his head. "That's silly. You seem nice."
They spent the night playing board games and telling jokes while lightning painted the sky outside. Max learned that Zed wasn't a zombie at all—he was a Storm Spirit, lonely because everyone was too scared to say hello.
"Being different doesn't mean being scary," Max said, giving Zed friendship bracelets they'd made.
Zed smiled, and his whole face glowed like a lantern. "Will you be my friend forever?"
"Forever," Max promised.
As the storm faded and morning peeked through the window, Zed had to go back to the clouds. "I'll visit every storm!" he called, floating away.
Max waved, his heart full. Sometimes the scariest-looking things just need someone brave enough to say hello first.
