The Stormy Game
Oliver was no ordinary cat. His fur was the color of a ripe, glowing orange, and he could do something most cats couldn't—he loved playing baseball. Every Saturday, the neighborhood children gathered in the park, and Oliver would chase after every ball they hit, his orange tail waving like a happy flag.
One afternoon, as Oliver crouched in the outfield, dark clouds gathered overhead. The children hurried home, but Oliver stayed behind to find a stray ball that had rolled into the nearby pasture. That's when he met him—a massive, gentle bull named Barnaby who was watching the storm approach.
"You shouldn't be out here," Barnaby said softly. "There's magic in stormy weather."
Oliver nodded but kept searching. Just then, a flash of lightning split the sky, followed immediately by thunder that rumbled like a giant's laughter. In that brief moment of light, Oliver spotted his baseball near the fence—and something else. The lightning had revealed Barnaby's true form: the bull was surrounded by a soft, golden glow, and his eyes held the wisdom of a thousand storms.
"You're magic," Oliver whispered.
"Every creature has magic," Barnaby replied, lowering his giant head. "The storm just helps us see it. Now, let's get you home before the rain."
Oliver scrambled onto Barnaby's broad back, and together they raced through the pasture as big, fat raindrops began to fall. The bull moved with surprising grace, and Oliver felt like he was flying.
When they reached Oliver's house, Barnaby nudged him gently with his wet nose. "Your baseball, little friend. Remember: storms may be scary, but they also show us things we'd never notice otherwise."
Oliver gripped his baseball and watched as Barnaby disappeared into the rain, a magnificent creature hidden in ordinary sight. From that day on, Oliver never feared storms—instead, he watched for the lightning that could reveal magic in unexpected places, even in something as simple as a bull's kindness and a game of baseball.
