The Stormy Baseball Game

Emma loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, she'd grab her favorite bat and practice swing after swing in the backyard. Her orange cat, Pumpkin, would watch from the porch, twitching his tail with every hit.

One cloudy afternoon, Emma heard a strange groan from the woods beyond the fence. It sounded like a zombie! Her heart raced. Zombies were supposed to be scary monsters that lumbered around saying "BRAINS!"

Penguin bounded toward the woods, meowing curiously. Emma followed, clutching her baseball bat like a shield. Through the trees, she saw a greenish figure shuffling slowly between the oaks.

"Stay back!" Emma called out, raising her bat. But the zombie stopped and looked at her with sad, lonely eyes. It wasn't scary at all—it was just lost.

Suddenly, lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating the zombie's true form. It was made of old leaves, twigs, and moss, held together by forest magic. A forest guardian!

"I'm Twig," the zombie whispered. "I've been asleep for fifty years. The storm woke me up, and I don't know where I am."

Emma lowered her bat. "You're not a zombie. You're a guardian!"

Twig's mossy face brightened. "I used to protect children who played in these woods. Are there still children who play here?"

Emma smiled. "Come meet my friends. We're playing baseball tomorrow. You can watch!"

Twig spent the night learning about baseball. When Emma's team played the next day, Twig became their good luck charm. Every time someone hit a home run, the forest guardian would do a little shuffle dance that made everyone laugh.

That summer, Emma learned that scary things aren't always what they seem. Sometimes, what looks like a zombie is just a lonely friend waiting to be found. And sometimes, the best teammates are the ones you meet during a storm.
