The Storm We Couldn't Post

The sky purpled like a bruise as Maya huddled with her squad in the Adirondack chair. They were at Sophie's lake house, supposed to be the weekend that fixed everything—Maya's crushing anxiety about starting sophomore year, Leo's weird vibe after they almost-kissed at summer camp, the whole group's unspoken frustration that they weren't as close as they used to be.

"Did anyone bring an umbrella?" Chloe asked, clutching her phone.

"Bro, it's fine," Jayden said, though he kept glancing at his iPhone like it might magically summon better weather. They'd spent the whole morning trying to capture the perfect golden hour shot for TikTok, but the light kept cooperating just enough to tease them, never enough to nail it.

Then it happened—a crack of **lightning** that split the sky in two, so close Maya felt the hair on her arms stand up. Thunder shook the porch boards beneath their feet.

"We should go inside," Sophie said.

But Maya didn't move. She was watching something at the edge of the woods—a massive shape moving through the trees. A **bear**, just twenty yards away, silhouetted against another flash of lightning.

"Holy shit," Leo breathed, and his hand found Maya's without thinking. For a terrifying, electric second, no one moved. The bear raised its head, sniffed the air, then lumbered away into the darkness.

"Did that just—" Jayden started, but Maya was already scrambling for her phone. Her fingers found only the wooden deck. She'd left it inside on the charger.

"No signal anyway," Sophie said, checking her own screen. "Storm took out the tower."

They sat there for an hour as the storm raged, no posts, no stories, no carefully curated moments. Just them, huddled together, watching nature do something wild and unfilterable. By the time the rain slowed, Maya felt different—lighter somehow. The anxiety about starting high school, the weirdness with Leo, the pressure to perform their friendship online—all of it seemed smaller against a storm you couldn't control and a bear you couldn't post.

"Tomorrow," Maya said, squeezing Leo's hand, "we're going swimming. No phones."

"Bet," Jayden said.

And for the first time all summer, Maya didn't reach for her phone to document the moment. She just let it be real.
