The Storm Under the Hat

Maya's life was over. Officially. Catastrophically. The stylist had said "just a trim" but what Maya got was the unholy lovechild of a mullet and what happens when you put a bowl on your brother's head and let him go wild with safety scissors.

"It's... asymmetrical," her best friend Priya had offered, which was rich coming from someone whose Instagram bio literally said 'vibes only.'

Now Maya stood at Tyler's house party, baseball cap pulled low, sweating through her favorite crop top. Everyone was looking at her. They definitely weren't, but that's how it felt when your hair looked like it had been attacked by a lawnmower.

"Nice hat," said this guy, Jake, who'd somehow gotten hotter over summer break and also learned to speak in full sentences. "You always wear that inside?"

"It's my thing," Maya said smoothly. "I'm mysterious now."

"Cool, cool." He leaned against the wall beside her. "So, mysterious... you wanna go outside? I heard there's supposed to be lightning."

Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgets how to organ. Outside. Where there was wind. Where her hat could blow off and reveal the monstrosity beneath. But Jake was looking at her with those stupidly nice eyes, and her mouth disconnected from her brain.

"Sure."

They ended up on the porch as thunder rumbled in the distance. The air felt electric, heavy with that pre-storm pressure that makes everything feel possible and dangerous at the same time.

"So about the hat," Jake said, and Maya's heart sank. "You gonna tell me what you're hiding, or do I have to guess?"

Lightning flashed across the sky—purple-white, spiderwebging through the clouds. Maya took a deep breath and yanked off the cap.

"DISASTER HAIR," she announced. "Go ahead. Laugh. I know it's bad."

Jake stared at her through another lightning strike. Then he grinned. "Dude, it's not even that bad. You look like those indie girls on TikTok. It's giving main character energy."

"You're just saying that 'cause you think you're gonna get a kiss out of this."

"I mean," he stepped closer, "did it work?"

Maya rolled her eyes but she was smiling. Outside, the sky lit up again. Whatever. The hair could grow back. But this moment? This lightning-struck, slightly terrified, completely electric moment? This she'd keep.
