The Storm That Changed Everything

Emma sat by her window, watching the dark clouds gather. Her dog Barnaby, a scruffy golden retriever with one floppy ear, rested his chin on her knee. They both loved storms—the way the sky lit up and the rain made everything smell fresh and new.

But tonight's storm felt different. The air crackled with something magical.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning flashed—not in the sky, but right in their backyard! It zapped through the old oak tree and sparked across the grass like tiny silver fingers.

"Barnaby, look!" Emma whispered, pressing her nose against the glass.

The lightning bolt had hit something behind the barn. Emma grabbed her yellow raincoat and boots. Barnaby barked excitedly, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled.

Outside, the rain poured down, washing over them as they ran to the barn. And there, lying in a patch of glowing grass, was the most incredible thing Emma had ever seen.

It was a bull—but not like any bull from the farm down the road. This bull was made of pure lightning! His body shimmered with crackling energy, his horns were bolts of frozen light, and when he breathed, tiny sparks floated from his nostrils like golden fireflies.

The Lightning Bull looked at Emma with eyes that held entire storms—swirling clouds and flashes of brightness. He didn't seem dangerous. He seemed lonely.

"Are you okay?" Emma asked softly.

The bull nodded slowly. A tiny lightning bolt zapped from his horn to Barnaby's nose—but instead of hurting, it just made Barnaby sneeze and then lick the bull's glowing face.

Emma laughed. "Barnaby likes you!"

The Lightning Bull's eyes swirled brighter, like he was smiling too. He nudged Emma's hand with his snout, and she felt warmth, like summer sunshine, not electricity.

"You need help getting home, don't you?" Emma realized.

The bull nodded again.

Emma looked at the stormy sky. "Barnaby, we have to help him!"

Together, the girl, the dog, and the lightning bull walked toward the clouds. With each step, the bull grew stronger, his light brighter. When they reached the edge of the property, the bull turned and touched his horn to Emma's forehead—gently, like a butterfly landing.

*Thank you,* a voice whispered in her mind, sounding like distant thunder. *Friendship is the strongest magic there is.*

The Lightning Bull leaped into the storm clouds above, becoming one brilliant flash that illuminated the whole night sky.

Emma stood in the rain, smiling, while Barnaby danced around her, barking at the clouds. From that day on, every time a storm came, Emma and Barnaby would wave at the sky.

And sometimes, just sometimes, a bolt of lightning would flicker twice—like a lightning bolt winking back at them.

"Come on, Barnaby," Emma would say, heading inside for hot chocolate. "Our friend is saying hello."
