The Storm That Brought Friends

Lily loved rainy days. She would press her nose against the cold window glass and watch the drops race down like tiny rivers. But today was different. Today, the storm had brought something magical.

A small orange cat sat on her windowsill, shivering. His fur was wet and stuck up in silly tufts. Lily opened the window slowly.

"You're soaked!" she whispered, reaching out. The cat didn't run away. Instead, he jumped inside and shook water all over her bedroom floor.

Just then, a red fox appeared at the edge of the garden. But this fox wasn't like the ones in storybooks. She had a silver star on her forehead that glowed softly in the gray light.

"I've been looking everywhere for Finn!" the fox said in a voice like chimes. "I'm Misty, and this silly cat is my best friend. He chased a butterfly right into your garden!"

Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

"Only on stormy days," Misty explained. "When lightning cracks open the sky, magic spills out. My grandmother told me that's how all the most wonderful friendships begin."

Suddenly, a bright flash of lightning lit up the whole sky. BOOM! Thunder rumbled like a giant stomach growling.

Finn the cat scrambled under Lily's bed, his tail poofed to twice its normal size.

"Don't be scared," Lily said, crawling under with him. She pulled out her flashlight and made shadow puppets on the wall. "See? Lightning is just nature's camera flash. It takes pictures of brave hearts."

Misty peeked under the bed. "That's beautiful, Lily. My grandmother was right — the storm did bring something wonderful."

They spent the afternoon telling stories and sharing cookies while the rain drummed a happy rhythm on the roof. When the storm finally passed and a rainbow stretched across the sky, Misty had to go.

"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked.

Misty touched her nose to Lily's palm. "Remember what I said about storms? Sometimes they bring scary things like thunder, but they also bring the most unexpected gifts. Like friends."

Finn curled up on Lily's pillow and purred so loudly it sounded like a tiny motor. He wasn't going anywhere.

"Grandma says that's the best thing about storms," Lily whispered as she scratched Finn's chin. "They remind us that even the clouds can cry, but there's always sunshine after. And sometimes, you find friends in the most unexpected places."
