The Storm Sprite's Gift

Cleo hated thunderstorms. Every time lightning flashed across the sky, she hid under her quilt with her stuffed rabbit. But tonight, something strange happened.

In the attic, she'd found an old orange tucked inside a wooden box. It had been there for years, yet somehow it hadn't rotted. Curious, Cleo brought it to her room just as the first rumbles of thunder began.

When lightning struck nearby, the orange suddenly began to glow—not yellow like lightning, but a soft, warm orange that filled her room with gentle light. Cleo watched in wonder as tiny cracks appeared on the orange's surface.

Something poked out. A small hand, then a head. A creature no bigger than her thumb climbed out, its skin shimmering like water droplets in sunlight. It had wings that crackled with tiny lightning bolts.

"Thank you for freeing me!" the creature squeaked. "I'm Zephyr, a storm sprite. I was trapped in that orange for seventy-three years!"

Cleo's fear disappeared. "You make the lightning?"

"Not all of it," Zephyr said. "My family creates the beautiful lightning that helps plants grow. The scary lightning comes from Shadow Storms. They trapped me because I wouldn't help them destroy things."

Zephyr's wings drooped. "But now I can't return home. Shadow Storms will catch me again."

Cleo thought hard. Her grandmother's garden had been dying for months. Nothing grew there anymore—not flowers, not vegetables, not even weeds.

"What if you hide with me?" Cleo suggested. "My gram's garden needs help. Can storm sprite magic fix it?"

Zephyr's eyes widened. "Storm water! If you collect rain during a storm while I add my lightning to it, it becomes magical water that can bring any garden back to life!"

Together, they placed a jar outside in the rain. Zephyr sent tiny, gentle lightning bolts into the water as it filled. The water began to glow orange—like the enchanted orange that had held him prisoner, but now free and beautiful.

The next morning, Cleo poured the magical orange water all over her grandmother's garden. Within hours, green shoots appeared everywhere. Flowers bloomed in brilliant colors. Vegetables sprouted so fast you could almost watch them grow.

Her grandmother cried happy tears.

Cleo wasn't afraid of storms anymore. She knew that somewhere in the rain, a little storm sprite was dancing in the puddles, and that even lightning could be magical when you had a friend to share it with.
