The Storm's Special Magic
Emma loved summer evenings, especially when she could practice her baseball in the backyard. Her orange tabby cat, Mango, always watched from the porch, his tail swishing like a metronome.
Then came the storm.
Crack! BOOM! Lightning flashed across the sky like nature's fireworks. Emma's ball rolled toward the swimming pool, which had gone unused all summer. The old fence around it had rusted holes, and strange sounds sometimes echoed from behind it.
"Wait!" Emma cried. She chased her baseball — but stopped cold at the pool gate.
Something green and lumpy was rising from the deep end. Something that looked like… a zombie!
Emma gasped, but Mango purred and trotted right up to the gate. The cat rubbed against the wooden slats, meowing happily.
The "zombie" climbed out, and Emma saw it was just her neighbor Leo, covered in green mud from the swampy pool bottom. His glasses were crooked, and he looked lonely.
"I… I live here now," Leo said quietly. "My parents are working late, and I have nowhere to go."
Emma remembered her mother's words: everyone needs a friend, especially when things seem scary.
"Want to play baseball?" Emma asked. "I'll teach you!"
Leo's face lit up. Even in the rain, they played. Lightning made everything glow like magic. Mango chased the ball whenever they missed.
When Leo's parents finally came home, they thanked Emma for being so kind. Leo wasn't a zombie — just a muddy boy who needed a friend.
That night, Emma realized storms weren't scary at all. Sometimes, the scariest-looking moments bring the brightest surprises. And sometimes, all it takes is a cat, a baseball, and an open heart to find magic in the most unexpected places.
